i was just looking for an .rar archive unpacker and found the unarchiver through opensourcemac.org.
create a password protected zip archive through the command line:
Dirk$ zip -e archive.zip file1.doc file2.pdf file3.cap

- drag = move file
- drag + option = copy file
- drop + option + cmd = alias of file
i got a “parallel to usb” adapter to conenct my hp deskjet 840c with my macbook but the printer seemed to freak out. i fixed this by changing the default driver to “HP DeskJet 840C – Gutenprint v5.1.3″.
this seems to be a common problem, luckily not really hard to fix.

i just talked to marc and he gave me some advise regarding video players and codecs for mac.
- flip5mac: support for the windows media video (wmv) format
- perian: quicktime support thingy
- niceplayer: a video player like the famous VLC media player but with a more pretty interface
now i just need to find a way to open WMV files NOT in the quick time player but in the NicePlayer. (just can’t stand the quick time player. i never could.)

i finally found a ftp client for my mac book! it was a long way and i tested at least 5 different ftp clients which all really sucked.
Caffeine is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Hold down the Command key while clicking to show the menu.
hab mir gestern ne incase laptop hülle für mein macbook gekauft (sieht aus wie ein taucheranzug).
und heute rede ich so mit gwynne (englische arbeitskollegin) und da schenkt sie mir doch tatsächlich ihre apple remote fernbedienung (sie hatte noch eine originalverpackte zuviel). jippi! nachden 25Pfund für die tasche kam die ersparnis (fernbedienung kostet eigentlich 15pfund) gelegen. günstig ist das apple zubehör ja nicht wirklich, aber schön sieht’s aus!
jetzt frage ich mich ob jemand von euch geschätzten freunden und lesern vielleicht schon erfahrungen mit remote software gemacht hat? also software, die es einem ermöglich mehr mit der fernbedinung zu machen als die standard features. wie z.b. remote buddy.

ich arbeite heute vom buero in london bridge und geniesse wieder den genialen ausblick auf die kreuzung unter mir und beobachte was da so passiert. natuerlich immer nur fuer eine sekunde, die restliche zeit bin ich naemlich voll konzentriert am arbeiten. und damit das mit der produktivitaet auch besser klappt habe ich jetzt angefangen auf dem mac “spaces” zu nutzen. klappt richtig gut!
- space 1: firefox
- space 2: Mail (nicht thunderbird, sondern das apple ding) und adium (instant messenger)
- space 3: Dw (dreamweaver)
- space 4: Ps (photoshop)
die pfeiltasten = ctrl taste lassen mich einfach durch die spaces navigieren. ausserdem habe ich die ecke oben rechts auf spaces gelegt. also wenn ich mit der maus in die ecke komme, dann oeffnet sich die ueberblickseite von spaces und ich kann einfach zu einem anderen wechseln.
naja wie auch immer.
meine mutter kommt heute in london stansted an. sie wird bis montag hier sein. habe mir fuer morgen (freitag) urlaub genommen und wir werden ein wenig im mietauto herumfahren. sie war bereits einige male in london. aber auch an den bekannten kuestenstaedten war sie bereits. wir finden aber bestimmt noch einen geheimtipp den wir uns ansehen werden.
das letzte mal, als sie mich besucht hatte ist jetzt bereits 8 monate her (fotos von ihrem besuch mit meiner schwester). gesehen habe ich meine mutter zum letzten mal an ostern. ist also ca 2 monate her, oder so.
andreas m. und mathias s. planen ja auch mich zu besuchen. vermutlich wird es das wochenende 20. bis 22. juni. ziv (der zur zeit uebelst krank ist, fieber und so) hat aber gesagt, dass es ihm lieber waere wenn nicht so viele leute bei uns pennen wuerden. deshalb werde ich mit den beiden vermutlich in einem hostel einchecken. ein wochenende zu dritt in einem 4er zimmer direkt im zentrum. was will man mehr!? wird sicherlich n gaudi! 
habe eben bei apple ein mac os x einfuehrungsvideo (ueber die neuen features) gesehen und glaube ich deinstalliere thunderbird jetzt und probier das von haus aus installierte mail. weil ich schreibe mir taeglich selbst emails mit erinnerungen / todos, was angeblich durch das notes feature verinfacht werden soll.

“take mail offline” funktion, laedt statt wie fuer imap ueblich n icht nur die mail header, sondern die kompletten post ein und ausgaenge inklusive text, attachments etc..

nachdem ich marcs bilder von seinem neuen bildschirm gesehen habe, hab ich blut geleckt.
ich glaube ich kaufe mir auch einen mac mini (599$) bevor ich England verlasse. Auf meinem ThinkPad R51 läuft seit Monaten Ubuntu und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Das einzige Problem ist, dass ich Photoshop sehr oft nutze und Gimp mir irgendwie nicht zusagt.
Mac wäre in Sachen Photoshop jedenfalls eine Alternative. Und ansonsten gibt es ja ausreichend OpenSource Software für was man sonst so braucht: OpenOffice (Office), Thunderbird (EMail, Newsgroups), Firefox (Browser), Adium (InstantMessaging), …

it plays now videos, cool.
it has a new design, uncool – it’s not nice (in my opinion).
it now just looks like creative’s zen player (which also plays videos, btw)

I am sure that there are lots of ways, for example using the free Software GNU Privacy Guard (PGP, GnuPG).
But how to encrypt your files without installing new Software on your MAC OS X?
Just use the /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilityt tool, which is included.
If you are doing it this way, then you have to put all the files, which you would like to encrypt, in one directory – for example <directory> = secrets
Encrypt:
hdiutil create -encryption -stdinpass -srcfolder <directory> <filename>.dmg
<filename> = The name of the generated encrypted File
Decrypt:
hdiutil attach -stdinpass <filename>.dmg
